Nicholson Ren
Nicholson is a Malaysian-Chinese freelance cinematographer and colourist based in the Melbourne film industry since 2016.
His most recent project was the short film Jia (2022) which won the 2021 AACTA pitch focus competition and is currently entering international film festivals. Prior to that, he also executive produced and was the cinematographer on Zarephath (2021) which is currently out on Amazon Prime.
Nicholson also has experience on studio-led productions. He truck-loaded and video-assisted the camera team on NBCU’s La Brea Season 1 (2021) and Season 2 (2022) as well as on Michael Gracey’s Betterman (2022).
His adaptive style comes from a background of experimentation and the philosophy that each story is unique. His approach to lighting is motivated by naturalistic tendencies resulting in a low-key look to most of his work. A quality that makes his work stand out from others is not just in the pursuit of beautiful visuals but rather for purposeful imagery that gives meaning in an edited sequence. His love of indie and foreign language cinema found at an early age, lends to his creativity and visual ability.
